To prevent fraudulent activities...
Get to know the types of fraud
- Making transactions with the cards that have altered card number and magnetic stripe information
- Use of the card that has been stolen from the card owner or that was lost by him
- Use of the card on the Internet or in mail orders upon having obtained the card owner's card number, the "valid thru" and three digit safety code details
- Use of the identification details that has been stolen from the card owner or that was lost by him
Watch for the possibility of card fraud
What Should You First Pay Attention At?
- Checking if the first four digits of the embossed number on the card is the same with the 4 digit unembossed number on the card
- Examining the hologram
- Checking the "valid thru" date
- Having the magnetic stripe neat and smooth
- Checking the signature on the slip, if any, with the one on the reverse side of the card
Detailed physical checks when accepting the card
- Is the card's appearance normal? (the colors of and the prints on forged cards are usually pale)
- When you waggle the card back and forth, can you see the hologram move?
- Do the embossed prints on the card appear neat and clean?
- On the face of the card, is the V character for VISA and are the special MC characters for MASTERCARD italic?
- Are the card number on the slip and the embossed card number on the card same?
- Note: The security features of the newly issued MASTERCARD and VISA cards are changed. Old cards are valid until the year 2010.
- The VISA logo on the face, at the right bottom side of the VISA cards is changed.
- On the VISA cards, there is a letter V on the VISA logo at the right bottom side, which is visible only under violet light and; in MASTERCARDs there is a MASTERCARD logo under or on the "Global Hologram".
- The hologram and the specially printed embossed italic letter V on the face of the old VISA cards, and the specially printed embossed MC on the MASTERCARDs are removed.
- On the reverse side of the VISA cards, there are holographic bird pictures on the magnetic stripe and; on the magnetic stripe on the reverse side of MASTERCARDs, there are holographic circles and writings.
- The CVV2 (3 digit security code) on the signature stripe of both cards are moved to outside the signature band.
The procedures that need to be followed when accepting cards
- Making sure that the gender of the picture on the card and the gender of the person who submits the card do match
- If shopping is done haphazardly (bulk shopping, garments with different sizes, hasty shopping)
- Checking if the signature affixed on the slip is the same with the signature on the reverse side of the card
- Checking if the signature on the reverse side of the card has been tempered with
Make sure that your system is secure
- PIN must not be seen or known by others
- Customers should not orally be asked their PIN and neither should they be recorded
- All of the digits of the card number should not be written on the slip
- Data should be kept appropriately

- Note: When it is established that customer and transaction details have been obtained by unauthorized persons, Security Department must be telephoned on 0212 478 29 22 and informed about the situation.
Be sure about the reliability of your employees
- Setting up recruitment procedures
- Being informed about the reason for the increase in the unusual expenses of your employees
- Following up the changes of the share of your card revenues in your total revenue
- Making sure that card transactions are made in front of the customer and that the cards are not swiped in other devises
- That in the restaurants, the POS device is taken to the tables to receive the payment
Find and stop the fraud
- Simple checks should not be omitted, you should not depend only on technology
- If you receive a “size the card” warning and prevent a possible fraud by doing so, you will be rewarded by your bank.
- Recordings of the cameras in your merchant must be kept for as long as possible.
- If police wants to keep the card that has been seized in the merchant as evidence,
- Police officer's name, surname, branch and telephone details must be taken;
- An exhibit delivery record must be requested;
- This must definitely be notified to the bank.
